Solar prominences require a very expensive narrow band pass filter.  (Which I do not have).  But you can see them in this image on the edge of the Sun's disk. 

At the 2001 Oregon Star Party I found a scope all set up with a solar prominence filter.  After waiting in line, I held my digital camera up to the eyepiece.  Every thing was set to automatic.
